What You Learn During Divemaster Training

Divemaster Skills

For part of your PADI Divemaster training, you will learn essential skills for setting up a dive site and managing predive preparation.

At the beginning of your training, you’ll have the valuable opportunity to shadow our experienced Divemaster Team. This hands-on experience will give you insight into the behind-the-scenes logistics of running a dive center.

Once you have a good understanding of the day-to-day preparations involved in organizing a dive trip, we’ll put your skills to the test. You’ll have the chance to perform various tasks, including:

Preparing emergency equipment
Greeting divers and organizing a dive roster
Monitoring dives from a suitable vantage point
Assisting divers before and after their dives
These practical exercises will enhance your knowledge and proficiency, allowing you to develop the necessary skills for efficiently managing dive operations.

Developing the skill of dive site mapping is crucial for your journey as a divemaster candidate. We will guide you through mapping techniques and pre-dive planning to ensure you can create accurate and detailed dive site maps.

Once you have a rough draft of your map, your mentor will provide guidance to help you identify areas for improvement and assist you in finalizing your project. We are dedicated to supporting you throughout the process, ensuring that your final map meets the highest standards.

To master this skill, you have the opportunity to conduct multiple dives. You can practice and refine your mapping abilities until you feel confident in your ability to create comprehensive dive site maps.

In this particular skill, you will have the opportunity to conduct a dive briefings for a dive sites, ensuring that you cover specific key points.

To guide you through this process, we will provide you with an aquatic cue card that comprehensively outlines each point. Additionally, we will organize a dedicated Dive Briefing workshop to further enhance your understanding and proficiency in conducting dive briefings.

Practice makes perfect, and we highly encourage our PADI Divemaster Candidates to practice this skill as much as possible. Throughout your training, you will have ample opportunities to refine your dive briefing abilities. Your coordinators, mentor, and other staff members will be available to support and provide feedback as you practice and improve your dive briefing skills.

This skill encompasses both theory and practical sessions. We will begin with a theory session where we will cover knot-tying techniques, lift bag procedures, and search patterns.

Next, we will embark on two dives to put your skills into practice. During the first dive, you will have the opportunity to:

Practice tying knots underwater
Rig and bring an object to the surface using an appropriate lifting device
Refine your buoyancy control by performing all skills neutrally buoyant
For the second dive, our focus will be on search and recovery. We will search for both a small submerged object and a larger object weighing no more than 11 kilograms. Your coordinators will organize you into groups to plan and execute two different search patterns, aiming to successfully recover both objects.

Please note that completion of the PADI Search & Recovery Specialty can also fulfill this skill requirement.

In this skill, our main focus will be on ensuring proper dive planning, effective communication within buddy teams, and executing a deep dive profile that prioritizes safety and conservatism.

To support you in this skill, your coordinators will conduct a theory workshop before the dive. This workshop will assist you in developing your dive planning and briefing skills, ensuring that you are well-prepared for the dive ahead.

After the dive, your coordinators will guide you in determining your Air Consumption Rate. This valuable tool will provide you with useful insights for future dives, helping you manage your air supply effectively.

During the workshop, special attention will be given to improving your buoyancy control, trim, and positioning. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to practice proper deployment of the Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (DSMB), an essential skill for safe diving practices.

It is worth noting that completing the PADI Deep Diver Specialty can also fulfill the requirements of this skill.

Divemaster Waterskills Development

Waterskills exercises:

As per your Divemaster program overview, you will be required to successfully complete five water skills exercises. Furthermore, these must accumulate a combined score of at least 15. These exercises include:

Exercise 1: 400 Metre Swim
Exercise 2: 15-minute Tread
Exercise 3: 800 Metre Swim
Exercise 4: 100 Metre Diver Tow
Exercise 5: Equipment Exchange

You have the flexibility to complete these exercises at any time during your training, with the guidance of our PADI Instructors. It is not necessary to complete them all in one attempt, and you can make multiple attempts if needed. Please note that only the equipment exchange exercise has a passing score requirement.

Our dedicated staff members will carefully explain the scoring criteria for each exercise and provide you with detailed instructions on how to perform each skill effectively. They will ensure that you have a clear understanding of what is expected from you during the waterskills exercises.

Diver Rescue assessment:

Whilst training, there will be an evaluation of your ability to respond to an unresponsive, non-breathing diver. This assessment builds upon the skills you learned in your PADI Rescue Diver Training. Some of the tasks you will be required to perform include:

Locating and surfacing a submerged diver.
Turning the diver face up and establishing positive buoyancy.
Towing the diver to safety while administering rescue breaths.
Equipment removal.
Exiting the water with the diver.
Since there is no one specific method for completing a rescue, your Divemaster Coordinators will collaborate with you to enhance and refine your Rescue Diver skills. This process can take place in either confined water or open water environments. They will work closely with you to develop a skill set that meets the required standards and ensures your competence in responding to emergency situations.

Dive skills workshop and assessment:

To successfully complete this assessment, your coordinators will conduct several skill development workshops.

In these workshops, you will learn how to perform skills for student divers. When demonstrating a skill, it should be approached in the following manner:

Break it down to emphasize important elements of the skill.
Execute the skill accurately.
Perform the skill slowly with exaggerated movements.
Make the skill appear effortless.
Your coordinators will collaborate with you to refine your demonstrations and overall skill development.

Once you feel confident, they will explain the scoring criteria and evaluate you on 24 skills. Each skill must receive a score of at least 3, with one underwater skill earning a score of 5.

To pass, your total score must be a minimum of 82 points. We encourage candidates to participate in as many workshops as desired.

You’ll be required to perform two skills, Regulator Recovery and Clearing, as well as Mask Removal, Replacement, and Clearing, in a neutrally buoyant state to achieve a score of ‘5.’

To provide a challenging and growth-oriented environment for our Pro-level candidates, we strongly encourage performing the majority of skills neutrally buoyant. This approach enables continuous improvement of personal dive skills and facilitates accelerated progress.
